TreePeople donated fruit trees to Grand View and we planted them this last weekend, with the help of some of our wonderful volunteers.
A new plum tree was added near the front fence and the parent center, where a dead tree was removed recently.

A peach tree was planted in the back yard, in the grassy area near the Pre-K yard.

A lemon tree was planted in the Kinder yard, replacing the weeds that previously lived there.

Both a lemon and lime were placed in the Pre-K yard, behind their raised gardens beds.

And finally, a lemon, lime, and blood orange were planted in pots in the Grand View Learning Garden area.

We have plans to plant one more apricot tree in the ground, in the Learning Garden area.
The Garden thanks the PTA for their financial support. With the money, we were able to buy long-lasting terracotta pots for the trees!

To coincide with parent-teacher conferences, our school librarian hosts a Scholastic book fair twice a year. Our first of the year starts next week, Dec 7, and continues on through the week.
PTA likes to lend a hand with this event, by reaching out and organizing our network of wonderful volunteers. If you are available next week, Dec7-11, between the hours of 8:00am and 3:30pm, we welcome you to join us in the library and help out. Leave a comment here or contact either Maria Ramirez or Melissa Davis to sign up or for more info.

The seedlings we planted at the beginning of school are getting quite big and flowers have begun to appear on our pea vines. The cilantro and salad greens are ready for harvesting, while the broccoli, cauliflower, and carrots are still a month or so from producing.

The kids have been checking in on the progress of their plants, ever impressed on how big they are growing. We trellised the pea vines, to support their growth. The children have been a wonderful help in keeping the weeds in check. They love to identify, pull the weeds, and show everyone their success. Overall, the children have been very careful with the plants, making sure to only pull the unwanted weeds.

Some of the children have noticed strawberries growing in the garden. We were surprised to see that berries grow here in the fall! How lucky we are to live in a place that grows food year-round!

Movie night was lots of fun! We got festive, with holiday lights, decor, and caramel apples, and planned for a chilly night, with nachos, pizza, hot chocolate, and Starbucks coffee. If you made it out for the event, we were happy to see you there. If you missed it, don’t worry, we plan to have movie night every other month, or so.

Our school is one of the Network for a Healthy California schools. This means each classroom gets a box of a different type of fruit or vegetables every month. This month: apples.

Some of the teachers passed out the apples for the kids to eat raw, while others wanted to make more of a project out of it. I went into these classrooms and we made applesauce. First I washed and peeled the apples.

Then the kids helped me cut up the apples and pour them into a pot.

After about 15-20 minutes, we had applesauce. Most of the teachers (and kids) were so surprised how easy it was. We added nothing more than a little water. And the kids loved it! They went home and told their parents about it. Mission accomplished:)

Can’t wait for next month: mixed variety of potatoes.

Our seedlings are just starting to peek out of the ground! And with them, come the weeds.
Some of our classes visited the garden this week, to check on the progress and pull out the unwanted guests. They were excited to help and to find some new garden friends like some ladybugs, rolly-pollys, and spiders. They also noticed the bees busy at work, gathering the pollen from the purple flowers of the rosemary.

Next week we will be taking a break from garden time, as we will be busy in the classrooms, making sugar skulls for Dia de los Muertos. See you back the following week.

Tomorrow, Tuesday October 20, is our annual Back To School night.
Come visit your child’s classroom, meet the teacher, and see what the class is working on.

This event is a great way to meet the other parents in your child’s classroom, and maybe even make some connections. Some classes have even gotten together and organized a roster for the parents to stay in touch. If you are interested in helping organize in your classroom, ask the teacher about being a room parent.
We hope to see you all there!! Go Grand View!!
